Have you been invited to an Indian wedding but have absolutely no idea on what to wear? Don’t fret any longer for here are the basins on
Indian wedding attire that will help you looking great on that date!
For women, there are basically three Indian wedding attire choices. First, there is the saree (sari). This is the classic dress choice for women to an Indian wedding, however, it is the one that is the most difficult to wear. They are worn by draping a single, long cloth (about 7 to 9 meters) around the body frame. There are many saree blouse designs, cuts, back styles, necklines and colors that are available; so choosing the best saree for you wouldn’t be too hard. Next is the lehenga (lengha). This is a long pleated skirt that is tied around the waist, leaving the midriff and the back bare. This is usually accompanied with a choli, a fitted blouse that ends just below the bust and is covered by a length of cloth called a dupatta (scarf). Then lastly, there’s the salwar-kameez. It is a pre-matched pant and shirt outfit. These are popular because they are easy to wear and very comfortable. The kameez (shirt) doesn’t have pockets and is worn together with salwars (loose-fitting pants) or churidars (tight pants). And like the choli, they come with a matching dupatta. But take note: once you have chosen a certain style, make sure that it is conservative enough. A very plunging neckline or a very exposed back is a definite no-no. And if the wedding is held at a place where it gets too chilly, make sure you bring an extra shawl.
For the men, there are four traditional choices at hand. First of all, there’s the sherwani. It is a knee-length, coat-like garment that is all buttoned-down in front and made from a heavy material. Worn underneath it is another garment that is wide at the top but tight at the legs and ankles. This is one of the most elegant choices at hand and is mostly worn during ceremonies like Indian weddings. Next there is the lungi. It is a garment that is sewn in a tube shape and looks like a skirt. Cotton lungis are commonly worn by people especially when it is humid, but for special occasions like Indian weddings, silk lungis are available. The next choice is the dhoti, which is a garment that is similar to the lungi except for the fact that it is wrapped around the waist, then the legs, and finally knotted at the waist. And lastly, there’s the kurta-pyjama. This probably is the most comfortable Indian wedding dress choice of all. This is basically a knee-length shirt (kurta) that is paired with loose trousers (pyjama) that is tied around the waist with a string. For Indian weddings, white is usually preferred but men can also wear a kurta-pyjama that comes in other pastel colors. With one of the choices mentioned above, men could never go wrong.
So remember, when choosing the right attire for you to wear at an Indian wedding, make sure that you go with the one that you are most comfortable in. And be confident when wearing the attire because if you are, you will look fabulous in anything. And make sure you have fun at that Indian wedding – that is the most important thing of all.
